The Festival da Natureza is a celebration of Madeira's remarkable natural heritage — its UNESCO-listed laurisilva forest, its dramatic mountain peaks, its whale-rich Atlantic waters, and its network of ancient levada irrigation channels turned walking trails. The festival programme runs across the entire month of October and includes guided hikes, water sports, birdwatching, trail races, and environmental talks.
Many events are free or significantly discounted during the festival, making it one of the best value times to experience Madeira's outdoor activities.
October hits a sweet spot on Madeira. The summer heat has softened (temperatures 20–23°C), the trails are quieter than peak summer, and the autumn light makes the landscapes spectacularly photogenic. The laurisilva forest — a primeval woodland found almost nowhere else on Earth — is particularly atmospheric in October mist.
The Nature Festival isn't just hiking. Whale and dolphin watching tours run with specialist naturalist guides during October. Canyoning, mountain biking, and trail running events are open to participants of all levels. Evening talks and film screenings about Madeira's natural history take place in Funchal.
Local tip: Check the trail open/closed status before heading out — some levadas undergo maintenance and may be temporarily closed. We update trail status on our events page in real time.
Do I need to be a serious hiker to enjoy the Nature Festival?
Not at all. The festival programme includes easy walks, family-friendly nature trails, and gentle coastal paths alongside the more challenging mountain routes. There's something for every fitness level.
What should I pack for hiking in Madeira in October?
Layers are key — it can be warm in Funchal and cold on the peaks on the same day. Waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes, and sun protection are essentials.
Are the Nature Festival hikes guided?
Many are — both through the official festival programme and through local tour operators. A guided levada walk is strongly recommended for first-timers as the trails can be narrow and routes are not always clearly signed.
